Accountant

Overview

We are looking for an experienced and hands-on Accountant/Finance Manager to take responsibility for the day-to-day financial operations of an established food distribution company.

This is a broad, all-round finance position suited to someone who enjoys being involved across the full accounting function. Working closely with the senior management team, you will ensure the company’s financial records are accurate, up to date and compliant, while providing reliable financial information to support business decisions.

The successful candidate will ideally have experience working within an SME environment and be comfortable managing the accounts function independently.

The Role

• Managing the day-to-day accounting and finance function of the business.
• Preparing and completing monthly management accounts and month-end processes.
• Supporting the year-end accounts and audit process, working with external accountants where required.
• Raising and processing sales invoices and managing purchase invoices.
• Managing accounts payable and accounts receivable.
• Carrying out regular bank reconciliations and investigating discrepancies.
• Monitoring customer accounts, credit control and outstanding payments.
• Processing supplier payments and managing supplier accounts.
• Maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records and accounting systems.
• Assisting with cash flow forecasting and monitoring the company’s cash position.
• Preparing financial reports and analysis for senior management.
• Assisting with budgeting, forecasting and financial planning.
• Processing journals, accruals, prepayments and other month-end adjustments.
• Managing VAT returns and other routine financial compliance requirements.
• Supporting payroll processes where required.
• Maintaining the fixed asset register and processing depreciation.
• Assisting with ad-hoc financial analysis and reporting.
• Ensuring appropriate financial controls and processes are maintained across the business.

Your Experience/ Requirements

• Previous experience in a Finance Manager, Company Accountant, Management Accountant or similar role.
• Strong understanding of general accounting principles and processes.
• Experience of managing month-end and year-end procedures.
• Good knowledge of reconciliations, invoicing, VAT and financial reporting.
• Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach.
• Strong organisational and time-management skills.
• The ability to work independently and take ownership of the finance function.
• Good communication skills, with the confidence to liaise with colleagues, customers, suppliers and external accountants.
• Strong Excel skills and experience using accounting software.
• Previous experience within an SME environment would be highly advantageous.
